Life is What Happens to You While You’re Busy Making Other Plans

I had my week all planned out. It included a wonderful balance of self care, work, exercise, couple time, and relaxing with friends. The kind of week that I encourage everyone to create for themselves.

Then life happened.

Bryan and I were out with a dear friend riding our horses Saturday morning. It was the first ride of Fall. The horses and the people were all happy to be out on the trails together for the first time in a long time when the temperatures weren’t searing hot.

We were on our final stretch of the ride and heading back to our trucks when my husband’s cell phone rang. What started off as a fun loving, jovial banter between Bryan and my stepbrother, Scott, ended with the upsetting news that my mom had fallen the previous night and broken her hip.

Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.

My mom and stepdad left six weeks ago on an RV adventure to Colorado and New Mexico. It is the maiden voyage trip of their new RV.

My mom fell and broke her hip. She had surgery last night and her surgeon said he was in and out in half the time he expected. Thank God. God is GOOD!

Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.

I am headed out to drive to Denver to be with my mom. I am completely scrapping my plans for my week to be where I need and want to be…with my mom.

I know that for me to be of service to my mom I must be impeccable with my self care so that I can keep my own cup full.

I am grateful that I will be in Denver with beloved family and near the Rocky Mountains where the Aspen trees are evolving into their full golden glory.  That certainly makes the necessity for me to keep my own cup full easier to achieve.

I know we have all experienced life unfolding NOT according to our plans. That is LIFE.

What practices do you have that support you in keeping your cup full so that you may be of loving service to others?
