One of the countless things I love about horses is how they are masters at living in the moment. They don’t have to-do lists or schedules, and they don’t waste a moment trying to get others to “like” them.
Unlike humans, horses communicate what they want to communicate and then they let it go.
If a lead mare wants a turn at the water trough, she’ll pin her ears to warn another horse to move out of her way. Pinning her ears is usually all it takes for her to communicate her message. Once the other horse complies with her “request”, she gets her drink and doesn’t think about it again.
The other horse doesn’t hold a grudge and think all day long about how bossy she is. He won’t ask her at dinner,
“Hey, are you still mad about that thing at the water trough this morning?”
I went out to the barn this afternoon with my laptop so I could write my weekly blog post while there. It was a gorgeous winter day and I thought it would be fun to hang out with the horses while I wrote.
I set up my workspace at a picnic table and fired up my laptop. Not two minutes later I felt a horse breathing warm air onto the top of my head. I turned around and discovered sweet Romeo standing over me looking at me full of curiosity. I gave him a pat on his neck and said “hello” to him. He grabbed the neck of my vest and held it into his teeth as if to say,
“Seriously? You’re going to work on this gorgeous day? I have a better idea…let’s play!”
He then proceeded to sniff my laptop and press random keys with his nose. It was obvious that I wasn’t going to get any writing done.
I’m convinced he was intervening on behalf of the Universe. It’s so clever the way the Universe gets our attention and communicates it’s messages.
Romeo was there to remind me to walk my talk and to put myself on top of my “YES” list.
Since 2018 started I’ve been laser-focused on taking daily action that moves me toward achieving my goals. One of my goals for this year is to get my EGCM® certification in July and I have a lot of requirements to complete to do so.
One of the “biggies” was to finish reading my last textbook and then write a book report on it.
I completed it last night and celebrated by doing a happy dance after I sent my report to my EGCM® teacher and program coach.
Really, I did a happy dance. It felt so good to get that done, as that textbook was “brainy” and it took me several months to read.
Melisa Pearce is the creator of the EGCM® certification program. She’s a brilliant psychologist, coach, and a lifelong horse woman. She’s written several books and also created a gorgeous deck of cards called, “Whispers From A Horse’s Heart”.
I love these inspirational cards. My husband and I each pull a card from the deck every morning while we’re eating breakfast. It’s a fun thing we do together before we go off in different directions for the day. We almost always feel like the card we pulled for the day contains the perfect message for each of us.
The card I pulled this morning was, “Celebration and Release”.
It says,
“It is time in your journey to celebrate and release. Look for everything you have to celebrate, no matter how seemingly insignificant. You are being asked to celebrate each hurdle, each small victory now, and not wait for larger, more impressive deeds to do so. Anchor your current experiences in the feeling of triumph and celebration. The lesson here is about the power of the collective smaller victories that must be expressed as you go along your journey. As you create and experience a feeling of celebration more frequently for each one, you will be assisted in achieving more victories. Kick up your heels and release joy.”
After reading the card to my husband, we agreed that I celebrated finishing my final textbook last night by doing a happy dance.
I felt like I had celebrated and released last night and I was ready to get back to business today.
Sweet Romeo had another idea and he made no bones about communicating it to me.
Between my card and Romeo’s clear communication, I got the message loud and clear.
I closed my laptop and spent some time playing with Romeo in the round pen. We had a great time together and I am grateful to him for encouraging me to enjoy some more time playing.
Romeo gave me an excellent reminder to take time to do the things that makes my soul happy. Spending time with horses makes my soul happy.
What’s makes your soul happy?
I encourage you to spend some time today or this weekend doing something that makes your soul happy.
It won’t be time wasted. In fact, it’ll be time spent refilling your cup.
So, what are you waiting for?
Enjoy!
Sending you my love,
