When Fearful Thoughts Come to You, Choose Again

Happy Monday, Beautiful!

Since recommitting to my sacred morning practices, I’ve been feeling in the flow, aligned with Spirit and my soul.

Then last week, fear showed up on my doorstep. It told me I needed to dim my light because my brightness was making other people uncomfortable.

I’m not kidding. That was exactly what fear said to me in an attempt to interrupt my blissful state.

Almost a year ago, I decided to find part-time work to supplement our income while I build my coaching practice.

I was clear that I didn’t want to get a job that required me to go into an office or business establishment because I felt that wouldn’t give me the flexibility to focus on my coaching practice.

So, I decided to look for part-time work as a virtual assistant where I could work from home, set my own schedule, and not be too much of a distraction from building my coaching practice.

When I got clear on the type of work I wanted to do, I saw an ad for a company that was looking for virtual assistants with experience in dentistry. The job description described me.

Within a week I had passed the intensive interview process and began working as a virtual dental assistant.

Thank you, Universe!

It can feel lonely working virtually from home. To foster a sense of connection and help us get to know one another, we have “Fun Friday.” Every Friday morning, the Team Manager asks a question in our group chat to get team members to share something about themselves.

The questions have ranged from, “Where is your dream vacation spot? It may be a place you’ve already been or somewhere that you want to go”, or “What would you do if you won the lottery?”

This past Friday was “What book are you reading or what podcast are you listening to?”

My response was that I’m a self-improvement junkie so most of what I read and the podcasts that I listen to are in the self-help genre. I said that I just finished two excellent books, “Everything is Figureoutable” by Marie Forleo and “Super Attractor” by Gabrielle Bernstein. I also shared that my favorite podcasts are “The Better Life, Better Work Show” by Allison Crow, “With Love, Danielle” by Danielle LaPorte, “Oprah Super Soul Conversations“, and “The Life Coach School Podcast” by Brooke Castillo.

Most of the other team members said they don’t read, and one person said she only reads “People” magazine or the tabloids because it makes her “feel better about her situation.”

After reading these comments, I heard the voice of fear in say to me, “You need to dim your light because your brightness is making other people uncomfortable.

Seriously?

Yep. My ego went there, and I immediately felt the painful sting of shame.

Thankfully, I immediately recognized that as the voice of fear. I witnessed it and saw it for what it was and immediately chose another more loving thought.

The more loving thought that I chose was, “It does not serve Spirit or align with my purpose to dim my light so others don’t feel uncomfortable.”

In her book, “Super Attractor”, Gabby Bernstein introduces a technique that she calls, “The Choose Again Method”. It’s a process that will stop the momentum of fearful thoughts. It is:

Step 1: Notice the fearful thought

When you notice a fearful thought that’s taking you out of alignment with joy, ask yourself, “How do I feel right now?” Then allow yourself to feel whatever is coming up for you.

Step 2: Forgive the thought

Forgive your fearful thoughts and celebrate your desire to feel good. Then, thank the fearful thought for showing you what you don’t want and for revealing what you do. She says to say to yourself, “I forgive this fearful thought and I know it’s not real.”

Step 3: Choose Again

Answer the question: “What is the best-feeling thought I can find right now?” Then, ask the Universe to guide you toward thoughts that will allow you to feel the way you want to feel.

I’ve written in the past how our thoughts create our feelings, our feelings create our actions, and our actions create our results.

So, when we run from our fears it gives them momentum, which produces undesirable results in our lives.

I love Gabby’s “Choose Again Method”. It’s an easy to remember process that helps to redirect our fearful thoughts into loving thoughts. It also has us feel our feelings, which gives us the contrast to show us how we want to feel.

It’s amazing that one moment we can feel aligned and in the flow, and the next our ego can produce a negative thought that sends us into fear.

It’s the continual dance between our divine consciousness (our souls) and our human consciousness (our egos). The level of consciousness that we choose to experience at any given moment determines the quality of our experience.

Beautiful, this week I invite you to pay close attention to how you feel. If you feel angry, fearful, or resentful, notice the thoughts that you’re thinking to create those low-level feelings. Then, practice Gabby’s “Choose Again Method” to redirect your thoughts to the best feeling thoughts that you can find at that moment.

We’re all eternal souls having a human experience and living our lives aligned with our soul’s purpose is a journey. As long as we’re in these physical bodies, there’s not a magical destination that we’re going to arrive at. This soulful journey is a daily practice.

I’ve shared countless times with you that I fall down. My intention for sharing my journey with you is to support you to know that you’re not alone. We all fall down. When we do, we must show ourselves compassion. Then we need to recommit to walking this soulful path and get back on our feet again…and again…and again.

Sending you so much love,

Lyn
